Low maintenance. Sure. We'll go with that.
Thoughtful, species-specific care for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and the people who know exactly how complex they actually are.
If you share your home with a rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla, you already know the truth: there is nothing low maintenance about loving them well. These are intelligent, emotionally rich, physically delicate animals with specific dietary needs, precise environmental requirements, and inner lives that reward every owner who pays attention. They also happen to be prey species, which means stress affects them in ways that are sometimes subtle and always significant. At Sploot Pet Concierge, we take small animal care as seriously as any species we work with — because we know what's at stake, we know the signs that matter, and we genuinely love these animals. We serve small animal families across Fitchburg, Madison, Middleton, and Verona with in-home care built around their individual needs, their established routines, and their right to feel safe and calm in their own space.
The Sploot Pet Approach to Small Animal Care
Fear Free care for prey species.
For animals whose survival instincts are wired around feeling safe from predators, the way care is delivered matters enormously. A rushed movement, an unfamiliar smell, a stressful interaction — these aren't minor inconveniences for a prey species, they're genuine threats to their sense of security and their physical wellbeing. Our Fear Free Certified approach means every interaction is calm, patient, and built around what your animal needs to feel safe. We let them set the pace, we read their body language, and we never push past their comfort zone. We will also be perfectly honest: we are very motivated to keep chinchillas feeling calm and secure for reasons that are both professional and personal.
Out of the enclosure, into the good stuff.
Every visit includes time outside the enclosure — more room to move, explore, and simply be the curious, active animals they're meant to be. We supervise carefully so adventures stay fun and nobody investigates anything they shouldn't. Some small animals want to zoom. Some want to sniff everything methodically. Some will climb directly onto us and declare themselves in charge. We're ready for all of it.
Species-specific knowledge, genuinely.
Rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas may share a category but they don't share needs. Rabbit digestion is famously unforgiving — we know why hay is non-negotiable and what it means if it isn't being eaten. Guinea pigs are deeply social and communicative — we know what popcorning means and we will absolutely report back when we see it, because that kind of joy deserves to be shared. Chinchillas have precise temperature and environmental requirements — we know that dust baths and heat sensitivity aren't details to approximate. Our Sploot training goes deep into each species so that the care your animal receives reflects who they actually are, not a generic small pet checklist.
We watch the things that tell the real story.
Small animals can decline quickly when something is off, and they're not always obvious about it. That's why every visit includes monitoring food intake and checking poop consistency — unglamorous but genuinely important, because changes there are often the earliest signal that something needs attention. We'll also let you know if it looks like your guinea pig threw a full party in their enclosure overnight.
Hay first.
Treats as negotiated. No matter how persuasively they lobby for more treats — and they will lobby — we know that hay is the foundation of a healthy small animal diet and we hold that line with warmth and affection. We are not above being charmed. We are simply committed to their wellbeing first.
Consistent caregiver pairing.
Prey species build trust slowly and lose it quickly. A consistent caregiver team means your small animal sees the same faces, smells the same familiar presence, and has the chance to actually relax into their care rather than spending every visit recalibrating to someone new. For shy or skittish animals especially, this consistency is what makes the difference between a visit they endure and one they genuinely enjoy.
Services for Your Small Animal
Pet Sitting
In-home visits that follow your small animal's established routine — out-of-enclosure time, enrichment, feeding, habitat monitoring, and careful attention to the small signs that reveal how they're really doing. Medication administration available as needed.
Pet Taxi
Calm, careful transport to exotic vet appointments with a caregiver who understands how stressful travel can be for prey species and handles the experience with appropriate care.
For Multi-Animal Households
Multi-pet small animal homes come with their own wonderful complexity — established hierarchies, shared spaces, and social dynamics that matter to get right. We want to understand all of it before care begins. Guinea pigs in particular are deeply social and we pay attention to how the group is interacting, not just how individuals are doing on their own.
For Small Animals Who Need a Little Extra
Shy, skittish, or slow-to-warm-up small animals do best with patience, predictability, and a caregiver who doesn't take the initial skepticism personally. We give them space, follow their cues, and let trust build at their pace — which for some animals means by visit three they're climbing us, and for others means they've decided to tolerate us from a respectful distance and that's fine too.
For small animals managing health conditions or requiring medication, we administer as directed and monitor carefully. If your animal has specific medical needs, we'll review the full protocol before your first trip so nothing is uncertain.
